Syracuse University Department of Choral Studies—Gregg Smith National Choral Composition Contest
In honor of the historic work of American composer/conductor Gregg Smith and the Gregg Smith Singers, the Syracuse University Setnor School of Music, Department of Choral Studies is pleased to announce the inaugural Gregg Smith National Choral Composition Contest. Award winning composer will receive a $2000 prize. The selected composition will be premiered on March 26, 2010. Travel expenses to the premiere are the responsibility of the prize recipient.

Composer must be 21 to 35 years of age at the time of submission. 3-5 minutes duration. Unpublished and unperformed works only. Unison to four parts for treble voices; accompanied by piano or organ; additional instruments optional Moderate level of difficulty, for a non-auditioned undergraduate collegiate ensemble. Rights to texts must be cleared, and evidence of copyright holder’s permission must be shown. Composer will retain the copyright of the piece. May be secular or sacred.

Submission Materials: Scores must be postmarked no later than September 30, 2009. The SU Department of Choral Studies will retain winning manuscript for future performances. The composer must reside in North America (including Mexico). Composer must include a biography and list of works with submission. Please include your name, email address, postal address, and phone number(s) in a sealed envelope together with your score. Size of manuscript must not exceed 8 ½ x 14”. No scores will be returned unless a self-addressed mailer and postage are provided. The winner will be notified by October 30. Submit to:

New York City Opera’s VOX
An annual festival of new operas that offers American composers and librettists the opportunity to hear their works with a full orchestra and City Opera singers. Every year, through a submission process, up to twelve new, previously un-produced works are selected from both emerging and established composers for orchestral readings that are free and open to the public. Traditional, non-traditional, and experimental opera projects to be considered.

October 1
Pacific Chorale Young Composers Competition
During the 2009–2010 season, Pacific Chorale is sponsoring a competition for young composers (under age 35) writing in the choral music field. Aspiring composers are encouraged to submit a three- to five-minute work for mixed chorus on the subject of love for the 24-voice John Alexander Singers. The winning composer or composers will receive a cash prize, and their pieces will receive premieres at the Orange County Performing Arts Center on February 12 and 13, 2010, with the composers in attendance.

October 5
Symphony in C—Young Composers’ Competition
The winning composer will receive a performance of the winning work by Symphony in C, conducted by Maestro Rossen Milanov, on February 6, 2010, a professional archival recording of the performance, and a round-trip domestic airfare to attend rehearsals and concert. The winning work will also be considered by Theodore Presser Company for inclusion in its rental library. The winning composer must provide 2 full scores and a full set of parts, with a sufficient string count. The winning composer may be asked to participate in educational outreach programs during the week of rehearsals.

Only composers born after February 6, 1980 may apply. Works with a performance history are eligible. Instrumentation may not exceed 3-3-3-3 (incl. standard doublings), 4-3-3-1, Timp., 3 Perc., 1 Keyboard, Harp, Strings. Works with soloists are not eligible. Duration should be between 8 and 15 minutes. Scores must be of legibly suitable for efficient rehearsal and performance. Parts must be carefully proofread, and of a legibility suitable for efficient rehearsal and performance, with good page turns, and ample rehearsal numbers and cues. Symphony in C recommends that all entrants consult its guidelines for preparing score and parts.

October 7
Boston Choral Ensemble—3rd Annual Commission Competition
In the fall of 2009 our Competition Jury will select a composer largely based on a portfolio of three representative works and a new work proposal. The selected composer will be commissioned to write a
piece for two performances and live recording during the Spring 2010 concert at the conclusion of BCE’s 9th season. The winner will also receive a $1300 cash prize and publicity related to the competition and concert

 

November 15
The Spectrum Singers 30th Anniversary Choral Music Competition
Composers under the age of 30 and residing in New England are invited to submit works for SATB chorus written since 2008, duration 7 to 13 minutes. Prize $750 and performance on May 15, 2010.

December 1

NATS Art Song Composition Award
The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) announces its biennial Art Song Composition Award for 2010. NATS offers a cash award plus a performance of the winning composition at a NATS Conference to the composer of the winning song cycle, group of songs, or extended single song. Competition is open to any composer whose submitted work meets the prescribed requirements, and who pays the competition entry fee.
1st place - $2,000 plus the composer's expenses to the 51st NATS National Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, July 2-6, 2010, where the premiere performance of the winning composition will be given.
2nd place - $1,000
