Course Objectives
This course functions primarily as a nuts-and-bolts practicum fostering understanding of how the instruments of the orchestra function both individually and in ensemble. During class time students will be introduced to the characteristics of each instrument with written exercises, supporting musical examples taken from significant orchestral works, and demonstrations by representative instrumentalists.

Score-reading and transposing skills are emphasized, both through sightreading exercises in class and through the assigned transcription projects. Scores will always be written by hand and transposed. A transcription may be submitted in notation software but a hand-written sketch must accompany this final version.

Course Objectives
Further study of instrumentation including orchestral combinations and extended techniques. During the course of the semester students work toward three short transcription projects culminating in a final project which will receive a reading.
