Music Manuscript

All Composition majors are required to demonstrate proficiency in either Finale or Sibelius notation software. During Orientation Week entering students (BM and MM) will sit with a faculty member and complete two extensive copying tasks. The student's ability to effectively utilize the software will be assessed and if there is a need for tuition a remedial course will be required: MU171 Music Manuscript for undergraduates and MU571 for graduates.

MU171/MU571 Music Manuscript is offered as and when needed for students with little or no practical experience in notation software. Because some students own and use Sibelius and some own and use Finale this course may emphasize one-on-one lab sessions more than class meetings. The differences between using Finale on different operating systems may also necessitate individual guidance.

Depending upon an individual student's level of experience this course will start by covering any needed basics of using notation software:
 • tool palette
 • score layout
 • document management
 • entering music
 • clefs
 • time-signatures
 • dynamics
 • articulations
 • lyrics
and lead on to more advanced usage of notation software with tuition in effective score preparation, part extraction, graphic notation, and how the software can be used as an aid to composing.

 • playback
