Music History Sequence
The five semester music history sequence comprises a detailed study of Western music in an historical context from antiquity to the present day, using specific works as examples. In addition to the two hours of lectures, students attend a one-hour weekly Study Group led by a Music History Department Teaching Assistant.

Music History 1: Ancient to Mid-Renaissance

Course Objectives
An understanding of the music of Ancient Greece, Medieval Europe, and the early to mid-Renaissance (antiquity to 1520) is provided through listening assignments, research, and familiarity with the following areas of study:
• Ancient Music, Greek Music
• Early Middle Ages; Liturgy, Chant, Modes, Mass, Office
• The Vernacular Tradition
• Early Polyphony; School of Notre Dame, Motets, English Polyphony
• French and Italian Music in the 14th-Century, Machaut
• Beginning of the Renaissance; Dunstable, Du Fay
• Franco Flemish Composers 1450–1520; Ockeghem, Busnoys
• Josquin des Prez
