Undergraduate
The following policy applies to all undergraduate Music History courses:

Music History 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (+ all Music History lab sessions)

• Attendance is required at every class.

• Late arrival to class is counted as an absence.

• Two unexcused absences drop the final grade by one letter grade.

• Three unexcused absences result in a final grade of F.

• A maximum of two excused absences is allowed at the discretion of the instructor.

• Documentation for excused absences must be presented to the instructor within one week of the
missed class. If documentation is not provided the absence will be marked as unexcused.

• In the case of an emergency students should contact the instructor by email or telephone within
24 hours of the missed class.

• The following are acceptable excused absences:
   Illness (with a doctor’s note)
   Audition (with advance notice)
Family emergency (email from Dean’s office to verify)
Religious observance (email from Dean’s office to verify)

• Doctor’s appointments should not be scheduled for times when classes meet

• In the case of a missed class quiz or assignment the instructor may, at his or her discretion, offer a
make-up time. Failure to attend this make-up session will result in a grade of F for this quiz.

• The conservatory has priority over outside activities such as participating in orchestral or individual
performances. It also has priority over social events such as weddings, when the student is not a
   family member.

• Students are expected to be available for classes on all days that school is in session. If travel plans
cause a class session to be missed, that absence will be considered unexcused.

The necessity of attending all classes is self-evident, and students who miss class sessions generally find it harder to attain a grade of B- or higher. This is particularly so in half-semester courses which, for the benefit of all participants, have an Attendance Policy of no absences. Students who miss important classwork may be advised to withdraw from these courses.

General Guidelines
• An excused absence for RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE requires an email from the Dean’s Office
to your instructor(s) in advance of the absence

• An excused absence for an AUDITION requires an email from the Dean’s Office to your
instructor(s) in advance of the absence

• An excused absence for ILLNESS requires a Doctor’s Note presented to your instructor(s) within
   7 days of the absence

• An absence for a FAMILY OR PERSONAL EMERGENCY requires an email from the
Dean’s Office to your instructor(s) within 7 days of the absence

• An absence that is not excused within the time frames specified above remains ‘unexcused’

• An absence that is not excused through the channels specified above remains ‘unexcused’

• Late arrival to a class may be counted as an absence
