Keyboard Sequence
Familiarity with the keyboard is fundamental to any understanding of music theory and music history. For students with little or no exposure to the piano the four semester keyboard sequence comprises Keyboard Skills 1 and 2 followed by Piano Class 1 and 2.

For non-piano majors with some keyboard experience the four semester keyboard sequence comprises Piano Class 1 and 2 followed by Keyboard Theory 1 and 2.

Keyboard Theory is an adjunct to the information taught in Harmony & Counterpoint and aims to reinforce this information at the keyboard.

Keyboard Skills 1
MU161
Fall Semester 2009
Credits: 1
Prerequisites: none

Course Objectives

• understanding keyboard geography
• independence of the hands
• playing in treble and bass clefs
• 2 octave major scales and arpeggios
• 2 octave minor scales and arpeggios
• intervals
• triads

Keyboard skills require both motor skill development and cognitive development. It is the student's own responsibility to practice daily in order to achieve and to demonstrate progress at each class. Without conscientious practice outside of class time there is very little likelihood of succeeding in this course.
